What to Prepare Before a First Consultation

Before meeting with an engineering firm for a silo or conveyor system project, it helps to gather a few specific documents and data points. The more concrete the information you bring, the more precise the initial assessment will be.

Start with the material you intend to store or move. Write down the bulk density, particle size distribution, moisture content, and any known abrasiveness or cohesion issues. If you have lab reports from previous handling, include those as well.

Next, define the required capacity and flow rate. For silos, this means the total storage volume in tons or cubic meters and the expected discharge rate. For conveyors, note the length, elevation change, and whether the line is straight or requires curves.

Also prepare a simple sketch of your existing layout. Mark the positions of entry points, existing structures, access roads, and any overhead or underground utilities. This helps the engineering team understand spatial constraints before proposing a solution.

Finally, list your operational goals: Are you looking to reduce downtime, increase throughput, or improve safety? A clear objective allows the consultant to prioritize design features that match your real needs.

Bringing these items to the first meeting can cut the proposal time by several days and result in a more accurate budget estimate.
